How to Judge Beer

Aug. 04, 2022

Nowadays, with the continuous popularity of alcohol, there are many people who like to drink, but very few people really understand alcohol. For example, if you put some beers in front of you, can you tell whether they are good or bad? I think it should be difficult for you. So do you know how to distinguish between good beer and bad beer, and what are the criteria for judging?

1. See Production Date

A simple and direct method - look at the production date, if it exceeds the shelf life, don't even think about it, just throw it away. Internationally, it is stipulated that the shelf life of ordinary bottled beer shall not be less than 4 months. Whether it is canned or bottled, the shelf life of beer is generally 4-6 months at room temperature and away from light. If refrigerated, the shelf life of beer can be extended to 8-12 months.

2. Look at the Bubbles

Foam is one of the criteria for judging the quality of beer. A glass of beer with fine and rich foam looks more beautiful, making people want to drink it at first sight. Moreover, the rich foam on the beer can delay the precipitation and diffusion of carbon dioxide gas in the beer, so that the beer maintains the killing power (carbon dioxide gas has a strong irritation to the mouth) and a refreshing feeling. Before judging a beer's foam, though, make sure the glass is clean, as oil stains or dishwashing detergent residue can disrupt the formation of beer foam.

3. See Color

The color of beer is very changeable, and beer can be divided into white beer, yellow beer, red beer, dark beer, blue beer, green beer, etc. Regardless of the color of the beer and whether the color is dark or light, it should be clean and eye-catching. In order to achieve a bright and eye-catching effect, in addition to the uniform tone of the beer itself, it must also be combined with the transparency of the beer. Most of the beers we usually drink are light-colored beers, and light-colored beers should be light-colored, light yellow or golden. If a light-colored beer is dark in color, the beer is probably bad or of very poor quality.

4. Taste

After seeing the color and smelling the fragrance, it is the taste. Beer is for drinking. Beer should have a pure taste, obvious aroma, refreshing and mellow, pleasant bitter taste, stimulation of the mouth by carbon dioxide gas, and no yeast or other peculiar smell. A good beer. Inferior beer tastes incorrect, with obvious peculiar smells and strange tastes, such as rancidity, sourness, iron smell, bitterness, and sweetness that is too strong or tasteless.

To judge the quality of beer, you can follow the steps of "seeing the foam, color, transparency), smelling (smell the aroma), and tasting (taste)". Foam, color, clarity, aroma and mouthfeel are the criteria for evaluating the quality of a beer. If you have a precise understanding of these reference standards, you can basically evaluate the quality of a beer.
